Bilkent University Student Centre

Student centre is situated the south end of pedestrian axis of Bilkent University Central Campus, in between Fine Arts & Architectural Faculty and Sports Centre, adjacent to the main road on higher level. With three different levels project takes advantages of an almost 10 meters of height difference of the site. It services and appears to the users as a park and terrace at the upper level, and social and cultural hub under generous size of a transparent canopy through the long pedestrian axis at the lower level. It is a public area with spacious inner volume, foyer for multifunctional uses and continuation of pedestrian circulation in between library and dormitory area.

32×32 meters atrium is surrounded by programs such as multipurpose hall, fitness centre, coffee shop, restaurant, stationery, registrar’s office, studying halls, office of the dean of students, radio, student clubs. Amongst atrium, different scale of courtyards and terraces provides additional social and common spaces with natural light and air.

At the first basement level of the building, closed parking areas, technical spaces and water storage areas are located. In addition, taking into consideration the harsh climatic conditions of Ankara, especially in winter season, energy and cost efficient labyrinth ventilation system is designed and situated at the second basement. Photovoltaic panels on the steel truss structure of lightweight canopy are also part of the passive energy strategies of Student Centre Project.
