Wadi Al Hada Masterplan

2014 – construction in progress

Wadi Hanifa is not just a topographical phenomena, but a prominent site with rich historical and cultural heritage. It is the birth place of the first Saudi State and has borne witness to major political and spiritual events during the course of Saudi history. Recent work on restoration and landscape enhanced the qualities of the area as a trademark of Riyadh both for the citizens and visitors worldwide, an environment to contemplate Najdi landscape and architecture. To work within such a context is both a joy and a challenge.

Project site is located on the extension of Al Diwan and Wadi Hanifa Roads of Al Hada District; in West Riyadh. It is the northeastern side of the Wadi Hanifa which runs from northwest to southeast, cutting through the city of Riyadh. In accordance with the topology of the land, the general layout comprises two major parts; Plateau on the same level with the city; Wadi on the same level with Wadi Hanifa in the form of a branching valley. The main objective of the proposed master plan is to keep the impact of the construction to a minimum and preserve the natural condition of the topography while making the most of such natural wonder.

It is predominantly a pedestrian environment, a firmly knitted fabric following the tradition of mat building quarters of the region, ensuring the human scale and the comfort of shaded outdoor living for its inhabitants. A sequential strategy is applied where spaces are linked to each other via streets, passages, bridges, courtyards and urban squares at the hinge points. Streetscape reveals an urban character, critically dimensioned to create a sense of pedestrian scale and shade overcast by the walls framing either side. Entrances to units are through courtyards which mediate between public and private, a transitional space providing depth to the streets. Altogether, the urban fabric deploys a delicate balance of density, just enough to secure a sociable environment.
